The economics of today’s publishing market are broken; writers struggle to reach an audience, and publishers are constrained by commercial pressure to play it safe rather than innovate. The net impact is that while it has always been hard to bring a book to market, it is now harder than ever to make a living from doing so.
The entire industry is dominated by outdated systems that concentrate profits at the point of sale. And while these systems have changed dramatically over the last hundred years, rather than taking fundamental leaps forward they have simply covered a broken spine with a glossy jacket. As a result and despite the technology the world has at its fingertips today, creators remain undervalued, underpaid, and under pressure.
At the same time, our minds are being polluted by an algorithmic fog. We consume half-truths and digest carefully crafted narratives designed to influence our thoughts and behaviour. Regardless of what we want, we are fed more of what we already know and like; more of the same. Without so much as a second thought, we consume what others have paid for us to see. And with every passing day, we lose a little more perspective.
All the while, our precious time is being stolen by the magnetic pull of social media. In whatever moments we have to ourselves, we now reach for a device and begin scrolling. Although we believe we make conscious decisions about what we do with our time, we hand much of it over to manipulative algorithms that suck us into a spiral of content that reinforces our likes and beliefs and locks us in an ever-shrinking bubble of isolation. But we only have so much time on this earth. It should be up to us how we spend it.
Fableration is leading a knowledge renaissance. As a not-for-profit foundation, our mission is to build a connected community that democratises storytelling and makes knowledge more accessible to all. Our platform will transform creative works into powerful tools for connection and growth in a mutually beneficial community. It will empower authors and publishers with fair royalties. At Fableration we aren’t simply building a platform and hoping people will come. We are out in the streets, listening to bookstore owners, writers and publishers. Their pain is obvious; bookstores are going backwards, writers struggle for wages, and publishers are under significant pressure.
We believe the combination of Blockchain and AI technology can solve these problems. We feel there is an element of magic in the productivity gains that the ethical use of AI and the tokenomics of cryptography can unlock. Together, they have the power to turn the publishing industry into a thriving knowledge economy.
